Plate and shell heat exchangers are an interesting combination of plate and shell heat exchangers. They combine the best features of both: the efficiency of plate heat exchangers and the safety of shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
The inner plates are welded together, eliminating the need for joints. This type of exchanger can therefore operate at temperatures ranging from -200 ˚C to 500 ˚C.
This type of plate exchanger offers a solution for systems where fluid flows are large and asymmetrical.
Heat exchangers play an important role in district heating systems.
The plate and shell heat exchanger variant with an open construction can generally be considered the best solution: as it is possible to clean one side of the exchanger very easily, this type of exchanger is often used as the primary exchanger in large boiler systems, to protect them from impurities in the pipes.
Because of the high flow rate in these cases, plate and shell heat exchangers can be manufactured with two separate plate packs within a single shell. Both can be opened and cleaned independently, which is a considerable advantage when working with dirty fluids.
